1951 Series 1 80"
Ex Ministry of Defence
Chassis Number 16103836
Fitted with a complete 1.6 litre engine (seized due to standing) from the military paint we assume it's a military recon replacement but is of the correct type for the year.
Serial number: 16107842
Excellent project which is very complete and a lovely original body - would make a great patina project.
The chassis is pretty good, needs repair but looks to be usable
The bulkhead will need replacing - we have just imported a correct age (bulkhead side light) spare bulkhead which is included that will need some work but is mostly sound..
More importantly all the expensive parts are there such as good dash, air cleaner, door tops, steering wheel, horn/dip assy etc, from what we can see very little if anything is missing.
According to the MoD plate it had an overhaul in 1954 which is probably when the replacement engine and pork pie lights were fitted.
We're finding it almost impossible to find original unmolested 80's for restoration now so if you want more info please call Marc on 07974 252766
Including UK registration (Historic Vehicle - nil duty) registered with DVLA as
SXS 286
For restoration
£11,950
(VAT not applicable)
The following is further information kindly sent from a military historian about this Series 1
Truck ¼ Ton 4x4 General Service Rover Mk1 from War Office Contract 6/Veh/7008 Dated 6 March 1951:
War Office Registration: 35 BD 68
Chassis: 16103836
Engine: 16108882
Date into War Office Service: 9 July 1951
Receipt Voucher: FTM/R/2789 [21st B Vehicle Depot Feltham in the County of Middlesex]
Struck Off Census: WD Storage & Disposal Depot Ruddington in Nottinghamshire on 23 August 1962.
Sold Off: Possibly at the 67th Ruddington Auction on 12 February 1963.
Markings:
Lower or early layer, date could be pre-November 1954:
Unit Sign: 72 on Royal Army Service Corps colours [Blue/Yellow] indicating third transport company in an infantry division 1950-58 [Regular Army] & 1950-61 [Territorial Army]
Formation Sign: Not enough showing on tailgate, you could try to reveal it on n/s front wing. If you find something, let me know.
Upper or later layer, probable date 1955 to 1961:
Unit Sign: 329 Battalion W.R.A.C. (T.A.), above WRAC Green & Brown colours.
The Auxiliary Territorial Service [ATS] became the Women’s Royal Army Corps [WRAC] in 1952.
This WRAC unit was formed in 1948 as the 4th [Northern Command] Group, ATS. Renamed the 308th [Northern Command] Battalion in February 1949 and then in April 1949, the 329th [Western Command] ATS, later WRAC. Re-titled 329th [Warwickshire and Worcestershire] Battalion WRAC in January 1955 and, then in February 1961, it joined the newly re-formed 48th [South Midlands] Division [TA] as the 109th [Birmingham and Worcester Company] WRAC [TA].
Formation Sign: HQ Mid-Western District of Western Command.
The vehicle still carries its original tow jaw, rear reflectors, trailer socket, windscreen vent, Rover Mk1 data plate. n/s wing mirror and one of its rear seats.
I can see the remains of the Jerrycan holder in the body which can be used to store the spare wheel; the spare wheel is normally carried on bonnet.
The heater might be original WD addition or post WD.
The flashers are not original WD and replaced the original trafficators after WD disposal.
The Ministry Of Supply [MOS] Repair/Rebuild data plate:
This indicates a Base Overhaul was completed in November 1954 by Workshop NOR/3; the identity of most workshops in the UK that carried out repairs and overhaul is not known. It is possible that “NOR” stood for “Northern Command” and “3” for No3 Workshop.
CI/6 is the inspector’s stamp.
